What Is Seongsan Ilchulbong?
Seongsan Ilchulbong (Sunrise Peak) is a volcanic crater on the eastern coast of Jeju Island.
It formed from an underwater eruption thousands of years ago, creating a huge bowl-shaped crater by the sea.
It is so special that UNESCO named it a World Natural Heritage site in 2007, and a Global Geopark in 2010. With green cliffs, ocean views, and a giant crater on top, it’s one of Jeju’s true wonders.

How to Get There
- From Jeju Airport or Jeju City Bus Terminal, take bus 111, 112, 211, or 212 (about 1 hour 15 minutes)
- The bus stop is right across from the entrance
- By car, it’s about 50–60 minutes from Jeju City

What Can You Do at Seongsan Ilchulbong?
1. Hike to the Crater Summit
The main event! It’s a short but steep climb up stairs to the top. It takes about 20–30 minutes to reach the summit.
From there, you can see the huge green crater and amazing ocean views all around.
2. Catch the Famous Sunrise
“Ilchulbong” means “Sunrise Peak,” and the sunrise here is legendary.
Arrive early (around 6:15 AM) for soft golden light and fewer people. Watching the sun rise over the sea from the peak is a once-in-a-lifetime moment.
3. Walk the Coastal Trail
Prefer something flat and easy? Take the coastal trail around the base.
This 30–40 minute loop follows the shore with dramatic cliff and sea views. It’s a hidden gem and a lovely, relaxed walk.
4. Watch the Haenyeo (Women Divers)
Jeju’s famous haenyeo — traditional female divers — often perform near Seongsan.
They dive up to 10 meters deep without oxygen tanks to catch seafood. It’s a special part of Jeju’s culture, usually seen in the late morning or early afternoon.
