What Is Hwaseong Fortress?
Hwaseong Fortress is located in Suwon, about 30 km south of Seoul.
It was built from 1794 to 1796 by King Jeongjo of the Joseon dynasty.

The walls stretch about 5.7 km around the center of Suwon.

What Can You Do at Hwaseong Fortress?
1. Walk Along the Fortress Walls
The best experience is walking the 5.7 km wall.
You will pass beautiful gates, guard towers, and pavilions. From the walls, you can see the whole city of Suwon.
You do not have to walk the whole way — even a short part is beautiful.
2. Visit Hwaseong Haenggung Palace
Inside the fortress is Hwaseong Haenggung Palace.
This was a temporary palace where King Jeongjo stayed during his visits.
It was the largest palace of its kind in the Joseon dynasty.
Today, you can see the halls and sometimes watch traditional performances.
3. See the Grand Gates
The fortress has four main gates.
Paldalmun and Janganmun are the most famous.
